Designed as a one-off for Mick Unwin of Brisbane Australia, this 550 design is a development of my Spider 550 without concessions made for series production.
She was built by the owner over temporary MDF frames in composites using a high-density foam core between laminates of multi-axial woven fibreglass cloth set in epoxy resin. The hull design features a single chine above the waterline with maximum hull form stability with a vertical lifting bulb keel and twin vertical lifting rudders in cassette boxes.
Mick utilised a second hand skiff rig so whilst the dimensions were not exactly as originally conceived, it proved close enough to justify the savings made. The displacement is the same as the Spider 550 at 500kgs and the boat is raced with two crew with an enormous cockpit with the outboard folding forward under the cockpit floor. She took about 2 years part time to build and is a credit to Mick who built everything from the hull and decks to the keel, bulb and modifying the rig.
Launched in 2019 “Fuzzy Logic” won its division in its first regatta being the 2019 Magnetic island race week against boats such as the Farr 1104’s with out having to do the last race.
